Job Overview:

Summary:

The Director, Content Strategy position lives within Pro Learning, the field facing arm of the Media and Communications Department at the ASPCA. Through ASPCApro.org and associated field facing newsletters and online assets, Pro Learning reaches professionals in the animal welfare field – teaching and training animal welfare professionals the best practices and innovative techniques to ensure animals live good lives.

The Director, Content Strategy plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining the ASPCA’s presence and reputation as the source for high-quality content and resources disseminated to animal welfare professionals through ASPCApro.org and related online channels. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing content strategy that is user-centered and goal-driven to both meet the objectives of the ASPCA and delivers the right content at the right time to meet the users’ needs. This involves building trusting internal and external relationships to understand the work of each team and anticipating needs and content focus areas. This position requires a systems thinker who has advanced experience with content structure within multiple interfaces, and can align information across these systems and touchpoints to benefit key stakeholders and advance the mission of the ASPCA.

Job Responsibilities:

Develop and Evolve Professional Content Strategy (45%):

  • Work collaboratively with subject matter experts, internal content providers, Media and Communications staff, and external vendors (i.e. Capellic) to conceptualize content-focused experiences and bring our work to life
  • Plan and strategize Pro’s long term strategy for the website and associated assets, presenting methods, explorations, and rationale to share with stakeholders
  • Elevate content strategy as a discipline within the ASPCA to ensure all content meets end users’ needs and supports the ASPCA’s long term strategy
  • Review and analyze user research to identify content needs and gaps across multiple stages of the user journey
  • Assess competitor content and user experiences for content coverage, quality, gaps, and emerging content trends
  • Conceptualize and implement creative ways to use original, licensed, and user-generated content to meet user needs
  • Evaluate and leverage all Pro resources and content as a holistic system to drive maximum impact

Lead Editorial Team and Editorial Process (35%):

  • Oversee content governance and update as user needs evolve to ensure the content is relevant and timely
  • Develop and maintain content standards as a way to influence both quality and efficiency for experiences
  • Develop and analyze KPIs and benchmark reports to measure content engagement success; course correct based on the information provided
  • Build editorial calendar to align internal needs and external stakeholder needs
  • Develop production calendar and ensure that all deliverables are coordinated and completed on time
  • Assign writers, edit content and on occasion write content

Management and Leadership (20%):

  • Supervise, coach and develop the Senior Manager, Online Content
  • Identify current and future training and growth opportunities for Senior Manager, Online Content
  • Conduct quarterly feedback sessions and yearly performance review for Senior Manager, Online Content
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the entire ProLearning team; offer best practices and opportunities for learning when possible and appropriate
  • Collaborate and share best practices with other members of Media & Communications as well as other ASPCA Departments.
  • Focus on developing team members’ soft and hard skills with a goal of elevating performance through active, actionable feedback

Job Requirements:
  • Able to strategically use SEO to inform content creation
  • Advanced experience writing and revising content for the user interface
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field — English, Communications, Linguistics, Journalism, Design
  • Experience and comfort level with software and collaboration tools
  • Experience and comfort level working with a variety of content management systems
  • Experience effectively managing complicated projects
  • Experience in information architecture desired
  • Experience with UX design process
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics
  • Knowledge of mobile first and responsive content strategies
  • Organized and efficient while comfortable juggling multiple projects and reprioritizing as needed
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills that encourage both ideation and collaboration
  • Strong track record working with a variety of teams across an organization and considering different perspectives
  • Understanding of the development, sourcing, and content governance

Language: English (Required)

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelors (Required)
  • 5 to 7 years of professional experience required, a minimum of 3 years content strategy for large enterprise web sites or applications, Management experience and/or experience in talent development on growing teams required, experience successfully supervising and leading a remote team strongly preferred
