Job Type: Part Time

Job Overview:
  • Director of Development (Remote)
  • Remote | Full Time

The effective altruism movement is allocating hundreds of millions of dollars and millions of person hours each year to improve the world. Better research can dramatically improve this allocation. Rethink Priorities is a research organization aimed at uncovering the actionable insights needed to do this. We have founding values — we care about transparency, tractability, short feedback loops, actionability, and impact assessment.

Since the beginning of 2018, we’ve:

  • Constructed cost-benefit intervention analysis for farmed animal welfare.
  • Conducted polls, surveys, and message testing to better understand how the public thinks about animal welfare. Our work has been used by the Humane Society for the United States, Mercy for Animals, the Humane League, and others.
  • Brought to light the important and neglected area of invertebrate welfare.
  • Created quantitative existential risk assessments, starting with nuclear war.
  • Analyzed the effective altruism movement through the EA Survey and the Local Groups survey.
  • And much much more!

We’re backed by The Open Philanthropy Project, Effective Altruism Funds, and other individual donors.

We’re currently seeking a Director of Development to help cultivate new and existing funding sources, and to expand our donor base. This position can be full-time or part-time, depending on the candidate’s availability, and the salary for this position is between $67,500 and $75,500, prorated for part-time work.

To apply, complete the form by clicking the button below, and include the following with your application:

  • Resume
  • Upload a single document with answers to the following prompts:
    • Prompt 1: Describe your familiarity and experience with Effective Altruism, and effective animal advocacy.
    • Prompt 2: Describe your experience with major gift solicitation and fundraising, especially as it relates to Effective Altruism or animal advocacy.
  • Writing sample
Job Responsibilities:
  • Solicit major gifts and write grant proposals
    • We’re growing rapidly, and are primarily funded by larger donors. We’d like to have a more diverse and larger donor base supporting our work. We’re looking for someone with experience cultivating major donors, and with grant writing know-how.
  • Improve our communications with donors and the public
    • Our organization has long focused on producing high quality research. But, we need to explore new methods of communicating our research and impact to our donors and to the public. We’re looking for someone who understands our work, and can help others find it and use it.
  • Maintain our donor records and manage all donor communications
    • We need someone who can keep our donor records up-to-date, keep our co-executive directors in the loop on development tasks they need to take action on.
  • Do everything else related to fundraising at the organization
    • From writing thank you letters to ensuring our fundraising tools are working, we are looking for someone with generalist development knowledge.
Job Requirements:
  • Understanding of animal welfare, longtermism, or Effective Altruism more generally, but have experience cultivating donors from outside of these communities.
    • Our current donors are primarily within the Effective Altruism and effective animal advocacy communities. While we work to steward our current donors, we also believe our work might be appealing to many donors interested in charitable impact but from outside of the effective altruism community.
    • We don’t have the skills or time resources internally to find and cultivate these donors. We need someone who understands our current donor base, but can help expand our reach.
  • Experience with major gift and grant solicitation, and especially experience conducting direct solicitation of major gifts
  • Experience with fundraising in the Effective Altruism space
  • Experience communicating on behalf of a nonprofit with donors and the public through newsletters, social media, and other means
  • Demonstrated written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Demonstrated grant writing and reporting skills
  • Preferred: experience managing staff. While this position is not currently a management role, it may become one in the future
  • Contribute to a fast-growing, high impact organization — our research is taken seriously by key decision makers who collectively influence hundreds of millions of dollars
  • Flexible work hours (work on your own schedule – full-time or part-time)
  • Flexible work location (we’re currently in four different countries and welcome new additions anywhere in the world)
  • A caring team that looks out for each other, has a lot of fun, and values having a healthy life outside of work
  • 10% of your time can be devoted to professional development / learning
  • Very low bureaucracy
  • We don’t provide snacks but we could mail you a box of Oreos if you want
