About the Global Communications Specialist

We are looking for a phenomenal communication specialist with excellent  track record in delivering high profile media coverage for large scale mobilisations. We need someone that can hit the ground running, is passionate about campaigning for climate justice. You will be able to work with a wide range or partners, from grassroots community groups to NGOs and other civil society bodies.  Your enthusiasm and positive attitude is integral to this exciting and challenging role.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in remote teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with a proactive mindset.

Working in close collaboration with our core communications team and our global partners, you will be responsible for supporting our communications work contributing to the organisation of global climate strikes this September. You will help us deliver effective, strategic and awesome communications work to help deliver what will be the biggest climate mobilisation in history.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the Associate Director for communications to deliver our ambitious communications plan for the September climate strikes
  • Support the work within the wider coalition in delivering effective communications. Including attending partner meetings as required
  • Preparing press outputs, pitching and securing high profile media coverage
  • Helping keep a wide group of partners from across the world informed, inspired and engaged in the mobilisation
  • Help with outreach and consultations with a wide range of organisations
  • Support the 350.org  climate strikes communications core-team with communications and media analysis at the end of the project

Job Requirements:

Required skills & experience

  • Passionate about Media and social media work that influences the public debate on the need to end the fossil fuel era as a priority to avert a worsening climate crisis
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Working knowledge of the current global debates on climate change and climate justice and strong interest in working on these issues
  • Good writing skills including press releases, op-eds and other types of communications outputs
  • Experience in delivering spokesperson training
  • Experience in pitching spokespeople to broadcast media.
  • Experience of leading geographically dispersed teams to work collaboratively to achieve shared goals
  • Strong communications strategy development skills, ensuring multiple areas of work are successfully delivered on time and on budget
  • Experience of working on global mobilisations / projects
  • Experience of building relationships and working effectively with a diverse range of external stakeholders (e.g. organisers; NGOs; academics; school strikers; artists, etc.)
  • Excellent teamwork, problem solving, program planning and management skills
  • Excellent written and oral English
  • Flexible
  • Resilient and able to lead in times of stress
  • Experience working with the climate movement

Desired (but not required) skills and experience

  • Proficiency in languages other than English
  • Experience working remotely
  • Experience working in nongovernmental organization or nonprofit sector
  • Experience with data collection and media analysis
  • Experience in audience engagement through digital channels
  • Professional experience and competency working in an international environment and in multicultural groups
  • Experience working and living in multiple countries
  • Able to travel internationally on occasion
  • Proficiency in Meltwater, CiviCRM, Airtable, Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom or similar systems

Benefits:

Compensation:

South Africa: 44,950 ZAR per month at 100% commitment (40 hours per week)

Taiwan: 54,250 TWD per month at 100% commitment (40 hours per week)

UK: 3,565 GBP per month at 100% commitment (40 hours per week)

Location: This is a remote position candidates from all locations will be considered

Work Environment: This role is predominantly home and/or office based

Travel: This role is likely to involve some travel, depending on the location of the Climate Strike – Communications Specialist
