Media Specialist – Remote Marketing Role/Media Relations Strategies (Remote U.S & Canada)

McPherson Strategies is a boutique communications consultancy focused on the intersection of brands and social impact. Our clients include corporations, social businesses, nonprofits, social entrepreneurs and foundations. We specialize in developing, amplifying and communicating social impact initiatives.
We’re on the lookout for a freelance media relations pro who can help us drive meaningful visibility for our clients in the social impact space. We’d start by having you work on one client, with the opportunity to potentially expand to other accounts.
Job Responsibilities:
- Work closely with our team to develop creative media relations strategies.
- Manage the pitching process soup-to-nuts:
- Develop media target lists.
- Draft pitches.
- Execute media outreach and manage follow-ups.
- Create prep materials for client interviews.
- Track progress and updates in real time.
- Monitor news daily to uncover new opportunities.
- Nurture relationships with journalists.
- Draft press releases and bylines.
- Research, track and pursue editorial opportunities.
- Participate in client and internal calls as needed.
Job Requirements:
- Experience working in PR and media relations (we are open to a range of experience levels)
- Strong writing, research and pitching skills
- A deep interest and diligent following of current news events and media platforms, particularly relevant to client issues
- A self-starter attitude
- Superb organizational skills
- Relationships with editors, freelancers and writers
- The ability to think outside the box
- An innate understanding of how to strategically position your clients for different targets
- The ability to work effectively with a team to conceptualize and execute strategies
- A strong work ethic and a commitment to providing quality work to McPherson Strategies teams and clients
